As part of the Buffalo Field Festival 2019, we are running two movement workshops led by international artists. The workshops will take place on the afternoons of Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December at Wat Soonthorn Thammathan (Wat Care Nang Lerng) Temple. This workshop will take participants on an exploration of understanding their own body through the methodology that Agung has established over many years: Breathing - wind giving breath; Listening - wind whispering to the ear; Sensing - wind touching your skin; Floating - wind rocking you like a cradle. Each one of those elements will be integrated with his understanding of Srimpi dance philosophy and historical contexts.
Participants are assisted to understand the strong connection between Javanese spiritual and animistic practices and influences on and adaptation into artistic forms. It is hoped that participants will be able to grasp and bodily experience the meaning of the 'four requirements to perfect the art of Javanese court dance' through this process; Sawiji - (concentration of mind) Greget - (enthusiasm and consciousness) Sengguh - (self-confidence) Ora Mingkuh - (no surrender).

Bio
Agung Gunawan studied the classical court dance of Yogyakarta in Surya Kencana under Ibu Kada. He explored other traditional dance styles such as Sumatranese, Betawian and Kalimantan with Bagong Kusudiharjo and contemporary dance with the broad range of multi-disciplinary artists.
After having started working as a solo and independent dancer, he worked in many projects nationally and internationally, and has performed in Australia, the United States, Europe and across Asia. He is recognised internationally as a Master Javanese dancer. Along with his solo artistic career, he started teaching dance and art education to school aged children with his life and artistic partner, Deasylina da Ary in Pelem, Pacitan, East Java since 2008. Currently, he is a co-director of the art education school, Sampang Agung Centre for Performing Arts (the SACPA) with Deasylina.

This workshop is a collaboration between Javanese Shaman, Agus Riyanto, and Malaysian Dancer-Choreographer, Tony Yap. Agus and Tony will facilitate an exploration of contemplative trance, in which participants experience a sensitive relationship between internal and external states of bodily awareness.
Agus plays an important role in the international dance community that supports festivals like Buffalo Field, Melaka Festival (Malaysia), and Pelem Festival (Indonesia), and is a central figure for the Bantengan ‘bull spirit’ cultural renaissance in Malang, Jawa.
Tony is the Creative Director of Melaka Festival, and a PhD candidate at Melbourne University where his research explores states of trance, informed by South-East Asian mediumship, devotional traditions and performance practices.
Together, Agus and Tony create a ‘safe space’ for participants to drop into a zone of resonance and creative impetus, especially for movement. This workshop will end with a ritual for deep trance experience.
Bios
Tony Yap, Malaysian born, is an accomplished dancer, director, choreographer and visual artist. He has been a leading figure in inter-cultural discourse and received Asialink residential grants in 2005, and 2008 and a Dance fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts. He was also the winner for the Best Male Dancer with the Green Roon Awards. Tony is the founding Creative Director of MAP Fest.
In 2007, Agus Riyanto revived the traditional art of Bull-trance (Bantengan) that had been extinct in the city of Batu, East Java. He is the founding director of the supreme Bantengan Trance Carnival, Nuswantara Joyo in collaboration with the Arts Island Festival 2008-2014. He achived Awards for bull-trances and bull whips in Batu since 1985. Mas Agus is a shaman and a proficient painter. Agus is highly respected in East Java for his deep understanding and work in trance performances and have lately incorporate it in contemporary experimentations with great success working with Agung Gunawan and Tony Yap in Melaka and Melbourne in ‘8 Men’ with performers from varied international backgrounds. Recently performed in Buffalo Field Festival, Bangkok and in Shadow’s Light as part of the Mapping Melbourne program December, 2018.
